European Mobility Week Celebrated with Enthusiasm

European Mobility Week is a European Commission initiative that encourages cities and municipalities to take and support sustainable transport measures, celebrated around the world from 16 to 22 September every year. During the week, work is carried out to improve the transportation planning of municipalities and public transportation systems, increasing bicycle and pedestrian paths and encouraging citizens to travel with alternative transportation methods instead of individual vehicles. The impact of the European Mobility Week, which was celebrated for the first time in 2002, has increased both in Europe and all over the world. Municipalities within the scope of the week; It carries out projects focusing on mobility management, accessibility, new or improved bicycle infrastructure facilities and organizes "Car-Free Day" events. In order to increase the visibility of the European Mobility Week and to increase the examples of good practices, itwas launched at "mobilityweek.eu". Our municipalities are encouraged to renew their registrations through this address every year and to upload their activities to be carried out in our municipalities to the system. Municipalities that commit to organise events during the week, take measures to promote sustainable mobility and participate in the 22 September Car-Free Day are entitled to receive the title of "Golden Participant".

In addition to the activities carried out within the framework of the theme of the European Mobility Week, the activities organized between 16-22 September to encourage pedestrian and cyclist transportation and to raise awareness have increased visibility by sharing them on social media with #HareketlilikHaftası #MobilityWeek #TBB tags.

Mix and Move

The European Mobility Week is celebrated every year around a theme. The theme of 2019 is "Safe Walking and Cycling", 2020 is "Zero Emission Mobility for All" and in 2021 is " Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility ". In 2022, the theme of the European Mobility Week was determined as "Better Connections" and "Embrace Your City" and awareness activities were organized with the slogan "Mix and Move".

Participation in the European Mobility Week, which will also set out on different themes in the coming years, provides information and experience sharing needed by the municipalities of our country. For 2020, approximately 3000 municipalities from 53 countries held activities within the scope of the week; In 2021, this number reached 3184 municipalities from 53 countries.

Municipalities that are "Golden Participants" are entitled to apply for the "European Mobility Week Awards" organized by the EU Secretariat, evaluated by an independent jury and given by the European Commission. Awards are also given in the categories of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and EU Road Safety. Apart from the Commission awards, the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye rewards our municipalities operating within the scope of the European Mobility Week. Awards; metropolitan municipalities, municipalities with a population of over 100 thousand and municipalities with a population below 100 thousand. The aim of the awards is to promote successful campaigns and raise awareness of the need for local action in the field of sustainable urban mobility.
