UNITED NATIONS EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMISSION (UNECE) WORKING PARTY ON TRANSPORT TRENDS AND ECONOMIES (WP.5) 36th SESSION WAS HELD

United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Working Party on Transport Trends and Economies (WP.5) 36th session was held in Geneva, Switzerland on 4-6 September 2023. The Session, which lasted for three days and discussed transportation trends and economies in different sessions, was attended by participants from many countries of the world, consisting of many ministries responsible for transportation, national railway organizations, transport infrastructure managers and operators, as well as private sector associations, NGOs and academy representatives, both physically and online.

Multimodal transport corridors management, development of transport networks, transport infrastructure data, transport and climate change, cyber security of electric vehicle charging stations, bicycle infrastructure, sustainable transport goals, coordination with other UNECE units and WP.5's business plan issues were discussed in the meeting where Esma Dilek, Deputy General Manager of Communications of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (UAB) and President of ITS Türkiye attended the meeting as a speaker. Information on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) studies in Türkiye, developments in Türkiye regarding electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging infrastructures, ongoing projects and future planning on ITS and electromobility were shared with stakeholders from many different countries of the world who participated face-to-face and online with Dilek's presentation. Especially the developments in our country on the development of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure were shared with the participants and consulted.

Dilek shared up-to-date information in four categories in her presentation: (i) Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in Türkiye, (ii) Electromobility (E-Mobility) in Türkiye, (iii) Ongoing ITS and E-Mobility Projects, and (iv) Future Studies. 

• Historical development of ITS in Türkiye,

• Areas of use of ITS,

• Within the scope of the National ITS Strategy Document and the 2020-2023 Action Plan, legislation studies for electric vehicles and charging infrastructures carried out by public institutions, local governments and private sector organizations,

• Initiatives for the creation of infrastructures, 

• The current number of electric vehicles/sockets in Türkiye,

• The outlook of the electric charging infrastructure in Türkiye,

• Financial incentives offered by public institutions,

• Mobile applications showing electric vehicle locations and charging socket suitability throughout the country,

• Software and hardware solutions offered by the private sector,

• Information about the e-mobility fair held in Istanbul,

• Information about Togg, the born electric car of our country,

•Electric vehicle projection for the years 2025 and 2030 in Türkiye,

• Information about the planning project of electric charging stations in Türkiye,

• Information on R&D projects for the development of autonomous and connected vehicle technologies carried out with the national ITS architecture and academia,

• Information about the U-Charging project, the installation of which has started in TCDD service areas,

• ITS Data Management Center, C-ITS Test and Application Corridor, Zeeport (Zero Emission Maritime) project, future transportation concepts in aviation,

• Informed the participants about the collaborations and the effectiveness in the MoTI studies.

At the meeting, the issue of terrestrial transport in combating climate change was discussed, thematic evaluations were made on the critical role of land transport in accelerating climate change mitigation. At the meeting, where the issue of cyber security of electric vehicles and charging infrastructures was also discussed, information was provided about the risks threatening cyber security for electricity networks and autonomous and connected vehicles, the measures that can be taken, good practices, draft standard studies and guidelines prepared.

The meeting, which brought together stakeholders from all over the world, including industry leaders, also provided an important environment for professional networking and developing bilateral relations, and was an opportunity to present our country's potential to the United Nations.
